A gravel driveway is the way in to your home or your land, and it takes a beating. When it fails, you get ruts and mud after every hard rain. JRC Construction builds new gravel driveways and repairs worn ones for homeowners and landowners. We are based in Burlington and work within about 55 miles of town.
Many jobs start on raw land, where land clearing opens a path through the trees. On a new house site, an early driveway lets trucks reach the build. Gravel driveways are one part of the excavation work we do. We look at the job and give you a free written quote.

A new gravel driveway starts with the ground under the stone. Before any digging, state law calls for notice to NC811 at least three full working days ahead. Then we strip the topsoil and roots off the route, because soft dirt lets stone sink.
Federal soil maps put Cullen and Enon soils under much of Burlington, and both have clay below the topsoil. Wet clay turns sticky and soft, and stone pushed into it can vanish. So we shape the clay and pack it firm before any stone goes on. The state forest service's road guide notes that fabric under the stone keeps gravel from sinking into soft soil.
Next, crush and run goes down and gets packed until it locks up hard. The finished surface gets a crown, a low hump down the middle of the driveway. Rain runs off both sides instead of sitting in the tire tracks.
Most people call it all gravel, but the stone makes a difference. Crush and run is crushed rock with the stone dust left in, and it also goes by ABC stone. The ABC name comes from aggregate base course, the road-base stone in the state specs.
Packed down, the dust fills the gaps between the rocks, and the surface sets up hard. That tight layer holds up under tires and lets rain run off the top.
Washed stone has the dust rinsed out, and the state spec for No. 57 stone allows almost none. Water drains straight through it, but the loose stones roll and spread under tires. We talk through which stone fits your driveway when we look at the job.
Burlington averages about 47 inches of rain a year, and every season gets its share. A gravel driveway without a crown holds that rain in the tire tracks. Each car pushes the wet stone aside, and the ruts grow into potholes.
Stone dumped in the holes helps for a while, but the flat shape keeps catching water. So we regrade the driveway and shape the crown again. Fresh crush and run goes on where the stone wore thin, and we pack it down.
Sometimes the water pours onto the driveway from a slope above it. Then yard grading beside the driveway turns the water away before it reaches the stone. Near a state road, NCDOT's policy also bars a driveway from sending water across the pavement.
