Debris removal is the last step of many jobs around Burlington. A new house or a remodel leaves lumber scraps and broken drywall. A storm drops limbs across a yard, and clearing a lot leaves brush and stump piles. We load the pile with the equipment and haul it away.

North Carolina law defines construction or demolition debris as waste from building, remodeling, repair or demolition work. On a house job, that means lumber scraps, drywall, old shingles and broken block. For a homeowner, it is the pile left in the yard when the work is done.
Inside Burlington city limits, curbside pickup only goes so far. The city does not haul contractor waste, by ordinance. Bulk pickup takes building materials and lumber only up to two 32-gallon cans. It does not take logs or stumps.
A remodel or a new house often leaves far more than that. We load the whole pile with the equipment and haul it off. The number of loads comes down to the size of the pile.
Not building debris. The state's air quality office puts it plainly: it is always illegal to burn construction materials or anything man-made. That covers lumber, treated wood, shingles and siding.
Brush and stumps from land clearing can be burned, but the rules are strict. The pile must sit at least 500 feet from any occupied building on another property. It must sit at least 250 feet from a public road when the wind blows toward it. No fire may start on a day forecast for Code Orange air or worse, or during a burn ban.
A homeowner may burn yard waste only where local rules allow it and no public pickup is available. On a smaller lot with homes nearby, these rules often leave no legal place to burn. Hauling the brush and stumps off is the other way to clear them.
After a storm, safety comes first. A tree resting on a house is a job for an arborist. A limb on a power line is a call to the power company.
Once the wood is on the ground, debris removal is our part. We load downed limbs and trunks and haul them off. Burlington's yard waste pickup leaves any limb longer than 6 feet or thicker than 6 inches. The city also leaves wood cut by a tree service or a landscaper.
Clearing debris works the same way. Brush piles and stump piles come out, and the ground is ready for land grading.
