Old buildings taken down, the lot left clear

JRC Construction is a demolition contractor based in Burlington, North Carolina. We take down houses, garages, barns and sheds, then clear the site so the lot can be used again. We work for homeowners and landowners with a building that has to go. That might be an old house standing where a new one belongs, or a barn that is falling in.

What comes down is hauled off with our debris removal work. Once the site is clear, land grading can shape the ground for a new house or a yard. We work across Alamance County and the counties around it. Call or text (336) 516-7170 for a free quote in writing.

House Demolition Around Burlington and Alamance County

Hiring a demolition company usually starts with a plan for the land. Around Burlington, that might be acreage you bought with an old farmhouse on it. It might be a family home that sat empty until it was past saving. Taking the house down clears the way for what comes next.

Outbuildings come down the same way. A barn with a caved-in roof is a demolition job. So is a shed sitting where a new driveway should go. With it gone, the space opens up for a new shop or more yard.

What Do Demolition Contractors Need Before a Building Comes Down?

Paperwork comes before the machine work. Under North Carolina law, a demolition waits until the permits it needs are in hand. Alamance County's permit form for a demolition asks where the debris will go and about any asbestos removal.

Asbestos is the other early question. The state's Health Hazards Control Unit recommends an asbestos inspection before any demolition, single-family houses included. That inspection has to be done by an inspector accredited by the state. For buildings under its rules, the unit also wants written notice before demolition, even with no asbestos found.

If the inspection finds asbestos the work would disturb, it generally has to come out before demolition starts. That removal is its own trade, done by workers the state accredits. Houses built before 1978 may also fall under lead-based paint rules.

Demolition Services From Teardown to a Clear Lot

A demolition job is done when the lot is clear. The lumber and brick leave the property, and the ground is left ready for the next step. If brush has taken over an old homeplace, land clearing can open up the rest of the lot.

Plenty of teardowns lead to a new house. JRC Construction builds homes too, and our home building and remodeling work reaches about 30 miles from Burlington.

A new house on septic usually needs the county health department's Improvement Permit before construction starts. Once the county's permits are in place, our septic system installation work can follow on the same lot.

How We Work

How a Job With JRC Construction Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or Text

Call or text (336) 516-7170 with the address and the job. We set a time to come look.

2

We Look at the Job

We come out to see the site and how equipment gets in. On septic work, the county permit shows what goes in and where.

3

Your Free Quote

You get a free quote in writing, with the work spelled out. When you say yes, we set a date.

4

Before the Dig

State law calls for an NC811 ticket three full working days before digging. Septic work also waits for the county's Construction Authorization.

5

The Finished Job

We do the work in the quote. On a septic job, the county inspects the system before it is covered with soil.

FAQ

Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about demolition around Burlington and the surrounding Piedmont. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does house demolition cost?
The price comes from the building and the lot. How big the building is and what it is built from both matter, and so does the foundation under it. Access for the equipment and the number of loads to haul off count too. We look at the job and put a free quote in writing before any work starts. For market ranges by house size and the permit and asbestos rules, see our house demolition cost guide.
Do I need a permit to tear down a house in Burlington?
In most cases, yes. Inside Burlington city limits, the City of Burlington's inspections office issues building permits, demolition included. Alamance County's inspections department covers the unincorporated county and several towns, Elon and Haw River among them. Outside Alamance County, ask the inspections office for the county or town where the building sits.
How long does a house demolition take?
The paperwork sets the first part of the schedule. Buildings under the state's asbestos rules need at least 10 working days' notice, and any asbestos removal comes first. After that, the machine work depends on the size of the building and what sits under it. We lay out the timeline when we look at the job.
Will NC 811 mark the old septic tank and the lines to the house?
NC 811 gets the utilities to mark their own buried lines. State law requires that notice at least three full working days before a demolition. 811 does not mark private lines past the meter or a septic tank on private property. The owner's records or a private line locator can find those.
Can I burn an old barn instead of tearing it down?
Not under North Carolina's open burning rules. The state's air-quality division lists buildings, outbuildings included, among the things that cannot be burned. Burning construction materials is illegal too, so demolition debris gets hauled off. A fire department training burn is a separate process with its own rules.
How far from Burlington do you take demolition work?
We take demolition work up to about 55 miles from Burlington. That reaches west through Greensboro and Guilford County and east past Mebane to Hillsborough. Call or text (336) 516-7170 with the address, and we will tell you if it is in range.
