Septic system replacement puts a new system in the ground when the old one has failed. Sewage backing up into the house, or soggy ground that smells of sewage, can mean the system is done. The county Environmental Health program investigates the failure and issues a repair permit. We install the new system that permit calls for.
We are based in Burlington and work for homeowners across Alamance County and the counties around it. Once the county permits are in place, the installation is often a one-day job. If you are building a new house instead, see septic system installation. Call or text (336) 516-7170, and we look at the job and put a free quote in writing.

The state's septic fact sheet lists the warning signs. Sewage backs up into toilets, tubs or sinks. Plumbing drains slowly, especially during and after rain. The smell of raw sewage comes with soggy soil.
State rules add a sign you can measure. Effluent is the liquid that leaves the tank. When it rises to within three inches of the ground surface over a trench, that counts as a malfunction. The rules then say the owner must contact the county health department.
In Randolph County, part of our service area, the owner of a failing system gets a notice of violation. The owner then has thirty days to have the system repaired.
Replacement starts with a repair application to the county, filed before any work begins. In Alamance County, Environmental Health visits the property and evaluates the malfunction. The homeowner interview form in the application helps the county find the cause.
The county then issues an Improvement Permit and a Construction Authorization, which together make up the repair permit. State rules have the Improvement Permit cover both the first drain field area and a repair area. No construction or repair starts until the Construction Authorization is issued.
What goes in depends on what failed and what the county's evaluation finds. Some jobs need a new septic tank, and some need a new drain field in the repair area. Others need a whole new system of the type the soil now calls for. The county inspects the work before it is covered with soil, and the Operation Permit follows.
A replacement goes into a yard that is already lived in. The house, the well, the driveway and the lawn are all in place. We also build homes, so we plan the new system around the whole lot. Our excavation equipment takes a route that stays clear of the house and the well.
The state fact sheet says not to drive or park vehicles over a septic system. Some properties must also keep a repair area clear of digging, building and grading. Once the new drain field is in, we keep trucks and machines off it.
State rules say an old tank that goes out of use is emptied by a permitted septage firm. Then it is removed or collapsed, and the hole is backfilled. Pumping is another trade, so a pumper empties the old tank before it comes out. After the county inspection, we backfill and finish the ground with land grading.
