Mebane has grown fast along I-40 and I-85, yet city sewer serves only part of the land around it. Past the city limits, many homes run on a septic system and a well. A new house out there needs the county to approve the soil first. When an older system fails, the county issues a repair permit before a new one goes in.
JRC Construction is based in Burlington, about 10 miles west of downtown Mebane by US 70. Mebane is part of our service area, on both sides of the Alamance and Orange County line. We bring our septic system installation around Burlington to Mebane, for new houses and to replace failed systems. Call or text (336) 516-7170 for a free quote in writing.

Mebane grew from 11,393 people in the 2010 Census to 17,797 in 2020. The Census Bureau estimates 21,952 for July 2025. The Orange County side grew by about half between 2020 and 2025. Close to four in ten homes in the city were built in 2010 or later.
Alamance County runs no sewer system of its own, its land plan says. The plan says city systems only occasionally serve property outside city limits. In the 2020 Census, about nine-tenths of the land in the 27302 ZIP lay outside Mebane's city limits.
Without city water and sewer, a Mebane building permit needs an approved well and septic permit from the county. The city's 2024 utility plan also mentions developed areas its lines do not serve yet.
Mebane straddles the line between Alamance County and Orange County. Downtown and City Hall sit on the Alamance side, and the line runs about half a mile east. Lake Michael and the east end of town fall in Orange County. Census estimates put nearly four in five residents on the Alamance side.
On the Alamance side, Alamance County Environmental Health permits septic systems. You apply for an Improvement Permit and Construction Authorization, and a specialist evaluates the lot. The specialist augers soil borings and may ask for pits, usually dug with a backhoe. An approved Improvement Permit shows where the septic system must go.
Orange County Environmental Health permits the Orange side, and its Construction Authorization comes before the building permit. The county also keeps its own local septic rules, updated in 2024. For a four-bedroom house, it figures a quarter to a third of an acre of suitable soil. That covers the drain field plus a repair area held in reserve.
Federal NRCS soil maps show Cullen and Georgeville soils under most of the ground around Mebane. Both are well drained, with a red clay subsoil. Cullen covers most of the west side toward Burlington. Georgeville weathered from Carolina Slate Belt rock and runs east into Orange County.
NRCS rates both somewhat limited for septic drain fields, mostly because water moves slowly through the clay. About a fifth of the ground near town rates very limited, much of it creek bottoms and Enon soils. That is why the county's soil evaluation on your own lot decides the system type and where it goes.
In July 2025, the city reported about 10 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Chantal. The state's septic fact sheet says to keep downspouts and sump pumps from draining toward the drain field. Grading for drainage turns that runoff away from the house and the system. The same sheet says to keep cars off the system, so we plan any gravel driveway around it.
The county specialist has to reach the spot before any soil gets checked. On the Alamance side, the corners and the house site must be staked and flagged first. If the lot needs underbrushing or clearing, the evaluation waits until the ground opens up. Our land clearing opens a wooded lot so the specialist can get in.
North of downtown, the creeks that feed Graham-Mebane Lake, Mill Creek among them, carry the state's WS-II water supply class. The state's low-density limit there is one house per acre, and one per two acres close to the lake. In the Jordan Lake watershed, Mebane enforces a 50-foot buffer on streams and ponds, with the first 30 feet undisturbed. The county or the city sets the exact rules for your parcel.
State law calls for an approved erosion control plan before more than one acre is disturbed. Orange County asks owners to check with its erosion control office past 10,000 square feet. Once the permits are in hand, our excavation work covers the house site and the trench for the septic line.
