How do I get a septic permit in North Carolina?
It starts with an application to the county health department. An Environmental Health specialist evaluates the soil and issues an Improvement Permit when the site is suitable. The Construction Authorization comes next and sets the system type and the layout. Our guide to the septic permit process walks through every step.
Does North Carolina use a perc test for septic systems?
North Carolina uses a soil evaluation rather than a perc test. In Alamance County, an Environmental Health specialist augers soil borings, and some sites need pits dug with a backhoe. The state rules have the soil checked 48 inches down, or to rock or wet soil if either comes first. Texture, structure, color and depth then decide which system the site can take.
How long does a septic system installation take?
The installation itself is often a one-day job, done to the layout in the county permit. That day, the septic tank and the drain field go in. The tank holds wastewater while solids settle out, and the drain field spreads the liquid into the soil. The county inspects the system before it is covered with soil and then issues the Operation Permit.
My septic system failed. Can you replace it?
Yes, under a repair permit from the county. Sewage backing up into the toilets, or soggy ground that smells of sewage, can mean the system has failed. The homeowner files a repair application with the county health department, which looks at the system and issues the permit. We install the new system that permit calls for. Our page on septic system replacement shows how the job runs.
How does pricing work?
Every job gets its own price after we look at it. On a septic system, the soil, the bedroom count, rock and site access set the price. On site work like clearing and grading, the size of the area and what stands on it drive the cost. Call or text (336) 516-7170 for a free quote in writing.
What other work does JRC Construction do?
Our excavation side clears land, grades yards and house pads, builds gravel driveways and digs footings. We also handle demolition and haul off the debris. For overgrown fields and fence lines, we do brush cutting, known around here as bush hogging.
Can you get a wooded lot ready for a new house?
We can clear the lot, grade the house pad, build the gravel driveway and install the septic system. In Alamance County, the soil evaluation waits until a brushy lot is cleared enough to get through. That often makes clearing a wooded lot the first step. The building permit for the house comes after the septic Construction Authorization.
Do you build and remodel homes too?
Yes. Licensed in NC and SC, JRC Construction builds new homes and takes on remodels and additions. We also repair wood rot and storm damage. That side of the company stays closer to Burlington than the excavation work does.
What area do you serve?
We are based in Burlington, in Alamance County. Septic and excavation work reaches about 55 miles out, west to High Point and east to Durham. That takes in Greensboro, Mebane, Graham, Reidsville, Hillsborough, Summerfield, Asheboro and Pittsboro. See every town in our service area for the full list.
